Pet Insurance

Your pet can potentially be a source of significant financial loss to you. Imagine, if you can, how you would feel if your pet needed expensive veterinary treatment or even surgery and you were unable to afford it if it happens? I am able to speak about this from personal experience because, a couple of year's ago, my sister's miniature Italian Greyhound was suddenly taken ill with a serious medical condition. The treatment was extensive and came to many thousands. Fortunately, my sister had a comprehensive pet insurance policy, which meant that she was able to settle the bills without financial hardship, or worse still, that she did not have to decline the treatment and see her pet die because of lack of money. Ordering veterinary pet insurance cover is really a grudge purchase to most of us as we cannot justify the expense - until it is really needed!. There are such a variety of pet health insurance policies available that it does pay to shop around, particularly as some are much better than others but there can be no excuse for not trying to obtain at least the minimum amount of insurance for your pet. Not only will you be reassured that your finances are protected but you can also be reassured that, in the event that your pet needs either emergency or long term treatment he or she will receive the best care available.
There are two basic types of pet insurance, which we will now consider in some detail.
The first kind, we is the best to take out as soon as you acquire your pet, is lifetime health insurance. Your pet will be covered for all treatment for its lifetime as long as you continue to pay the premiums.
Of course, if the pet suffers a condition during the life of the insurance policy, there is a possibility that the insurance company will not continue the cover after the end of the first year, when the policy need to be renewed.
At the very least, it is likely that there will be a much higher excess payment on your policy in the light of any claim that has been made.
There is a second policy, which can be taken out, which exempts liability on the insurer for any condition that is pre-existing at the time that the policy is taken out. Whilst this may seem like a much less beneficial policy, it must be remembered that pet's are susceptible to accidents and of course there is always the possibility that a new and unrelated health condition might arise. It must be borne in mind that the insurance company is much more likely to reject insurance for older pets who have a history of health problems.
Finally, there are also certain insurance policies that may indemnify your pet's death, loss, or theft. these policies clearly go far beyond basic pet health insurance. You should consider all policies carefully.
